When I was 15, I couldn’t wait to get my drivers’ license. Most of us looked forward to getting that little card that suggested we were growing up. Now, it seems that teenagers don’t really care so much about driving.
Statistics from the Federal Highway Administration show that one in every three teens now has a license at 16. It used to be one of every two.
The downward trend is reflected in Florida and Hillsborough County, too.

I think is this very timely. We are seeing a major generational cultural shift away from car necessity. If you were to poll teens, I guarantee phone ownership is much more important. As I wrote on my blog, public transportation could anticipate this generational change and play a much bigger role in the not so distant future.

I don’t know if this trend has so much to do with the teenager or the cost their driving brings. My insurance rates were going to go up once I put my under age son on my poliy as an additional ‘household driver’ under the age of 18. So we opted to wait till he was older to get his license.
